General Guidelines for Web Maintenance
Some Good Ideas:
- Keep it simple!!!
- Provide relevant, up-to-date information.
- Test all hyperlinks. Use a service such as the W3C's link checker.
- Check spelling.
- Keep a common look and feel across all pages on the site.
- Write nicely structured ASCII HTML pages.
- Periodically validate the site with tools such as W3C HTML validator or WDG HTML Validator.
- Carefully consider if/how information will really be maintained before it is added to the site.
- Reuse common graphics on multiple pages (exploit caching).
- Include meta tags to help robots classify the site optimally.
- Test all changes locally before transferring up to the server.
Some Bad Ideas:
- Animated GIFs.
- Automatic loading background sound/music.
- Big bulky graphics.
- Blinking text.
- Browser-specific features.
- Clumsy, over generated pages.
- Links to non-existent future pages and "Under Construction" notices (all good Web sites are always under construction).
